Harriman Nature Walks at the Tiorati Circle
Picnic Area
During July and August, the Trail Conference sponsors Saturday nature
walks at 11 AM, leaving from the Tiorati Picnic Area. The walks are an
opportunity to introduce the picnickers, swimmers and anglers to the woods.
Families come for the day to relax and fish but seldom venture into the
woods. A 1.5 miles route along the A.T. provides teachable moments in
natural history and an introduction to the Trail Conference and what we do.
These walks are especially suitable for children, who must be accompanied by
an adult if under 16 years of age. Wear sneakers or boots - no sandals
allowed.
Other events are in planning stages.
Appalachian Trail Outreach Projects
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy sponsors an Outreach
Grants program that the local AT management committees have taken
advantage of for several projects.
- Ruta
Apalache - a Spanish language brochure on the AT in Harriman
- Approach It Right (AIR) - Leave No Trace project sponsor by NJ
AT committee
- Harriman Nature Walks at the Tiorati Cicle Picnic Area (see
above)
Service Projects
The Trail Conference has many opportunities available for outside groups
to join with us as partners in trail related service projects. We regularly
work with individual scouts working on their Eagle Award or Gold Award.
Church groups, business and other groups have also worked on specific
projects. Contact us at info@nynjtc.org
with either specific ideas of projects or a desire to fill one of our
opportunities. We also have small grants available to
youth groups to use on projects.
Example projects:
- Telephone Pioneer's Shelter on AT
- Trail relocation on Candlewood Hill
- Tent platforms at Wiley Shelter
- Bridges on AT
- Planting trees
- New privy at RPH lean-to
- Waterbars on Wilkinson Trail
- Photo book of views from trails for monitoring what is visible over
long time periods.
