Current Volunteer Opportunities

  • NJ ATV Campaign Assistant: Assist NJ Regional Representative with grassroots campaign to support passage of ATV legislation (currently passed House Transportation Committee unanimously). Campaign will include a statewide letter to the editor writing push, a concentrated advocacy effort in north Jersey to pass ordinances at the local level, and a series of press conferences in northern and western Jersey highlighting ATV damage in different parks across the area. Goal is to secure passage of legislation before the end of the current legislative session.

Paralegal/Legal Administrator: We seek a volunteer with some legal background who could assist C&A staff with administrative support in the office. Specifically, we have real property tax work and other tasks associated with land acquisition and stewardship, but there are also many other tasks that occur regularly. Ideally, we would like a volunteer who is able to work independently and commit to a regular weekly or biweekly time slot with some flexibility.
  • Stewardship Organizer: We seek a volunteer or intern to create and organize “field binders” for properties owned by the Trail Council. This position will require organizing some existing files, extracting the important information for the field binder, and visiting the properties as part of our general stewardship activities. This is a great summer project that will allow you to hike Trail Conference properties along the Shawangunk Ridge Trail and the Long Path.
  • Archive Indexer: We seek a volunteer or intern to index our archives. We have approximately 25 boxes of archived files that need to be indexed. Some boxes need to be better organized, but some boxes are ready to be indexed. This is a one-time project with an estimated completion time of about 25 hours.

A crucial piece of our mission statement is "Protecting hiking trail lands through support and advocacy."

One way we protect hiking trail lands is through active work on open space protection. We employ a land protection team and have a volunteer committee charged with finding and prioritizing open space lands that either connect or extend existing open spaces or occasionally stand alone pieces.

We work with a number of land trusts and state agencies who generally provide the bulk of the money for actual purchases. Because we can move very quickly on potential properties, we frequently provide: money for surveys, purchase options, pay back taxes and insurance on easements.

Help to lobby local, state and federal officials to protect the rights of hikers and trail lands. Action alerts posted on this website allow volunteers to voice their opinions about critical issues being decided in the legislature. Your letters make a difference.

If you have an interest in assisting with our conservation and advocacy efforts please let us know by signing up using the Volunteer Interest Form (PDF) or Online and indicate an interest in Conservation & Advocacy. This form will allow us to match you with the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!
