These maps are Copyright NY-NJ Trail Conference 2001-2005 and may not be printed or used for navigational purposes. They are only for exhibiting on screen for people to evaluate the design elements that we use in producing our digital maps.
Treatment of multi-use trails on maps PLEASE COMMENT
Three proposals taken from East Hudson Map 103 7th edition (not available yet).
Design goals:
- Distinguish multi-use from hiking only trails
- Make distinction easy to notice but not obnoxiously obvious
- Consistent across map sets
Some considerations that have been mentioned in the past:
- Gray band is obnoxious (perhaps toning down shade of gray will help)
- On most current maps dashed means unmaintained
- Purple may have the same problem we had with orange on Sterling Forest map, i.e. hard to distinguish from red because of uncontrolled problems in printing process.
Characteristics that might want to be distinguished
- Multi-use vs Hiking only
- Maintained vs unmaintained
- Single track vs woods road/multi-track
- Horse/ATB/Foot
- Ski restrictions (some trails do not allow hiking during X-country ski season)
Map affected
- Sterling Forest (preferred user groups)
- Harriman (few - some horse some ATB)
- Palisades (few)
- East Hudson (few - some maintained, some unmaintained)
- North Jersey (many - early stages of digital version)
- Kittatinnies (some - some maintained, some unmaintained)
- Gunks (many - carriage roads vs hiking trails problem)
