Using technology, Ed Goodell projected sections of
the new S F map and
asked Trails Group members to identify iron mine sites not visible
from
trails. These sites are to be eliminated from the map. Several mine
sites
were located with greater accuracy. For reasons of safety and the
environment, the Park does not want secluded sites to be indicated.
Following this, the Trails Design Group Teams
presented interim reports
on their findings.
The Eagle Mt. and Doris Duke Park interim trail
proposals were rejected
by their teams and the group for some, but not all of the following
reasons:
Lack of significant views or points of interest. Proximity to horse
trail and
horse trailer parking, erosion, a “dead” marsh, extreme wetness,
and access
to Tuxedo Park Properties.
Bare Rock, Sterling Lake Loop, Fire Tower, Lake To
Lake, Jennings Hollow
Connector and long Swamp are Park Blazed woods roads or otherwise
exist on
the ground. Presentations were made on how these entities could be
improved
to provide for a quality hiking experience.
The Sapphire Trail proposal, as it presently
exists on the ground, is in
the process of being approved in Albany. Although, improvements to it
were
presented, it was decided to let the trail become a reality first
before
offering the Park these suggestions.
The Up and Down Area, Ringwood Connector,
Hasencleaver Mine and Beach
Valley woods roads and old, unmarked trail proposals were made. It was
noted
that they have the potential to link areas in the park as well as NJ
and NY
and could take the hiker to historical sites on historical routes.
Flagging,
full written proposals and GPS work remains to be done with these as
well as
the other presentations of the Trail Design Group Teams.
The next meeting of the Group will take place on January 30.
