Published by: New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (March 2009)

Walkable Westchester is the seven year labor of love of long time Trail Conference volunteers, Jane and Walt Daniels. Realizing that the same trails appeared in hiking guides to the New York metro area, they decided to write one devoted exclusively to Westchester County. When they started in late 2001, based on information obtained from not-for-profits, the Westchester County Parks department, newspaper articles, and the Internet, they figured that there were about 70-80 parks, preserves, and sanctuaries with about 200-250 miles of trails. Quickly they realized that their original estimate was wrong. By 2005, they knew of 150 places and by 2008, the list of parks to be included had grown to over 180. Twenty-two parks did not exist when the project started. Jane and Walt have hiked all of the almost 600 miles of trails in Walkable Westchester. They hiked many of those trails multiple times.

Suse Bell, the volunteer indexer and resident of New Jersey said "Who would have known there were so many parks in Westchester--I had just thought it was the endless suburbs as depicted in a John Cheever novel."

New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (March 2009)

Not thought of as a hiking destination, Westchester County contains a wealth of hiking opportunities. There are over 180 parks, preserves, sanctuaries, and protected open space in Westchester County. The almost 600 miles of hiking trails offer a range of opportunities: handicapped accessible to rugged terrain, through woodlands, wetlands, fields, meadows, or along streams, ponds, and lakes. Aside from property in and near Heritage Hills in Somers and two isolated tiny pockets elsewhere in the County, all homes in Westchester are within one mile of a park boundary or place to walk. Amazing, but even more so, because of the county's proximity to New York City.
