World class landscapes, art and culture, and history all make the Hudson Valley an attractive destination for nature and landscape photographers. But for me the real treasure is found in the huge network of hiking trails that cover both sides of the Hudson River, especially in the Hudson Highlands region.

Here the Appalachian mountains cross the valley along a 16 mile stretch of the Hudson River as they make their way south from Canada to South Carolina and beyond. They are believed to have been the highest mountains on earth some 460 million years ago, much like the Himalayas are today.

This region provides some of the most dramatic viewpoints along the Hudson, and a well established trail network attracts hikers in large numbers, especially from NYC and surrounding areas. I’ve been hiking these trails for many years, and I’m fortunate to live at the foot of Mt Beacon, the northern most point of the Highlands. From here you can follow several trails to many ridges both north and south, as well as hike all the way to Breakneck Ridge, probably the most popular hike in the region.

Trails in the Highlands are generally on the strenuous side especially with a backpack since you’re always climbing up from the valley. The views are worth the effort however, and you never know what type of light or weather you’ll get since the river often creates its own micro-climate. I have experienced several different types of weather during the same hike, so patience and perseverance are crucial to making successful images.

From a landscape photographers perspective, be ready for leg burning climbs, varied weather, and some of the most spectacular light you can experience. I have visited and photographed many of the same locations for years, yet never tire of finding new ways to interpret the landscape. Winter creates a whole different perspective, so my snowshoes get lots of use (and abuse) during the snow season.

Here are a few locations to get you started:

  • Breakneck Ridge: open summits, spectacular views, and many photographic options
  • Storm King Mountain: great location for panoramas, changing light, and often covered in fog
  • Mt Beacon: climb to the south firetower, and enjoy 360 views all the way to NYC on a clear day. Sunsets can be magical.

Pick up trail maps and other hiking gear at Mountain Tops Outfitters in Beacon, NY (bring your Trail Conference membership card to enjoy a 10% discount). You can also check out 50 Hikes in the Hudson Valley for more ideas.

A big thank you to the NY-NJ Trail Conference for keeping these trails in such great condition.
