Volunteer Coordinator

Job Description

The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is seeking qualified applications to fill the position of Volunteer Coordinator. This individual will build upon past volunteer successes to help us address the outdoor access and recreational ecology issues in northern New Jersey and southeastern New York. The position will be responsible for strengthening existing volunteer programs and building new ones. The Volunteer Coordinator will serve as an internal consultant providing support to the Volunteer Committee, volunteer leaders and the staff. The Volunteer Coordinator will also directly supervise some volunteers in managing the volunteer program.

Responsibilities:

• Determining overall volunteer program policy and procedures and assuring that up-to-date written guidelines are implemented
• Maintaining effective communications with volunteer leaders and staff to provide advice and counsel as needed
• Developing volunteer retention and recognition programs
• Tracking volunteer records and reporting volunteer results and statistics
• Planning and implementing strategies for volunteer recruitment, screening, orientation, placement and training
• Designing assessment tools to collect volunteer satisfaction data for short term and long term program enhancement
• Serving as risk management officer for the volunteer program. Including providing workman’s comp for volunteers, enhancing and improving the communication methods with volunteers regarding insurance policies and updating risk manages policies and procedures
• Updating and maintain the Volunteer Handbook
• Maintaining the Volunteer Web pages and creating content for the Trail Conference website
• Problem solving as needed

Qualifications:

• Previous volunteer management experience or three-years in human resources with the ability to handle a variety of tasks and personalities simultaneously
• A high appreciation for people and demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and manage volunteers
• A passion for hiking and protecting public access to wild and scenic open spaces
• Excellent written and verbal skills including the ability to understand and deliver clear instructions
• Proficiency in a fully networked, computer driven working environment

Created in 1920 as a federation of hiking clubs, today the Trail Conference has 9,500 individual members and 99 member clubs representing another 120,000 hiking enthusiasts. Its three-fold mission is: 1) the permanent protection of wild and scenic open space, 2) stewardship of trail corridors and 3) education of the public about the responsible use and access to these lands.
