A HIGHLANDS FIELD TRIP FOR GEOLOGY BUFFS
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2000
THIS IS A PREVIEW OF A NEW
PROGRAM BEING DEVELOPED FOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN OUR REGION THAT TEACHES
GEOLOGY USING HANDS-ON EXAMPLES OF THE ROCKS, MINERALS, AND PLATE
TECTONICS OF THE HIGHLANDS
This program, deloped by Dr. Alec Gates of
Rutgers University, is based on his most recent geological
discoveries about the Highlands. Dr. Gates was recently written up
in the New York Times for his work in the Highlands that has
revealed the story of a collision of continents more than 900
million years ago. Using sophisticated analytical procedures Dr.
Gate has determined the height and age of the mountains formed
during this process.
Participants on this field trip will be shown evidence of how
faults move, see where magma has intruded into solid rock, walk on
the roots of great mountains and learn why rich iron ore deposits
still exist in the Highlands. This guided tour of our permanent
outdoor museum is being designed as a tool to enable high school
students to learn the geology requirements of the New York State
regency.

Partnership, 845-294-3098 or e-mail sterlfor@magiccarpet.com.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant
from the Dorr Foundation.
