New Jersey Itinerary of Events for the

East Coast Greenway WAVE 2000

May 13th to May 20th

May 13 Saturday: City of Trenton

    • Location: Steps of the State House, Trenton
    • Time: 11:00AM
    • Coordinators: Jim Girvan/Mike Kruimer/Andrew Carten
    • Organized with the assistance of the Central Jersey Bicycle Club (CJBC) and the City of Trenton.
    • Invited guests will include Mayor Douglas Palmer, Federal and State legislative supporters, local and Mercer County officials, D&R Canal Commission and representatives from NJDEP and NJDOT.
    • The event will focus on the City's current waterfront greenway efforts and include the issuance of a Proclamation from Governor Whitman and General Assembly and Senate Resolutions from Assemblymen Kip Bateman(R16) and Peter Biondi(R16) and Senator Josephn Vitale(D19) supporting the ECG and declaring May 13th to 20th as the "Week of the East Coast Greenway WAVE 2000".
    • At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Wave will travel with a group of cyclists, organized and led by Mike Kruimer,President of CJBC, from the State House to the Kingston Locktender's House on the D&R Canal. The passage through Trenton will be on-road until reaching the D&R Canal Towpath. Participants will travel on the Towpath until reaching the Locktender's House.
    • The Wave will travel between Trenton and Kingston through Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties and the municipalities of the City of Trenton, Lawrence Township, Princeton Township, West Windsor Township, Plainsboro Township, South Brunswick Township and Franklin Township.

May 17, Wednesday: Kingston Locktender's House

    • Location: Kingston Locktender's House, Kingston
    • Time: 11:00AM
    • Coordinators: Jim Girvan/Sue Herron/Bob & Linda Barth/Elizabeth Dowd
    • Organized with the assistance of the Canal Society and the D&R Canal State Park.
    • Invited guests will include Federal and State legislative supporters featuring State Resolution sponsors Assemblymen Kip Bateman and Peter Biondi, Congressman Rush Holt, Somerset/Middlesex/Mercer County Freeholders and officials, D&R Canal Commissioners & Staff, members of the D&R Canal Historical Society and other local and State officials,.
    • The event will honor the history of the D&R Canal, the development of the Towpath as a recreational trail and its future as part of a National Millennium Trail.
    • At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Wave will travel off-road north by horseback, bicycle, hiker and canoe from the Locktender's House along the D&R Canal and Towpath. It will leave the Towpath and cross at the Landing Lane Bridge traveling through Johnson Park. It will then cross at Cedar Lane and go on-road through Rutgers University to Memorial Park in Metuchen.
    • The Wave will travel between Kingston and Metuchen through Somerset and Middlesex Counties and the municipalities of Franklin, South Brunswick, South Bound Brook, New Brunswick, Piscataway, Highland Park, Edison and Metuchen.

 

May 19, Friday: Middlesex Greenway

    • Location: Memorial Park, Metuchen
    • Time 11:00
    • Coordinators: Jim Girvan/Walter Stochel/Bob Takash/Don Kahn
    • Organized with the assistance of the Middlesex Greenway Coalition.
    • Invited guests will include Congressman Frank Pallone, NJ Senator Joseph Vitale, Middlesex County Freeholders, local officials and legislative supporters.
  • The event will focus on the Coalition's current struggle with the CSX and NS Railroads to get the right-of-way for their Greenway.
    • At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Wave will travel by bicycle and by foot via pedestrian ways 6 miles parallel to the Middlesex Greenway corridor to City Hall in Perth Amboy.
    • The Wave will travel between Metuchen and Perth Amboy in Middlesex County through Metuchen Borough, Edison Township, Woodbridge Township and the City of Perth Amboy.

May 20, Saturday: City of Perth Amboy

    • Location: Tottenville Ferry Dock, Perth Amboy
  • Time: 11:00
    • Coordinators: Jim Girvan/Jennifer Sciortino/Mike Kruimer
  • Organized with the assistance of the City of Perth Amboy.
    • Invited guests will include local, county, State and Federal elected officials to include Congressman Robert Menendez, Mayor Joseph Vas, Middlesex County Freeholders and all those who were invited to or participated in the week's events.
    • The event will focus on the redevelopment of Perth Amboy and its FOCUS 2000 Plan, redevelopment of the waterfront, reactivation of the ferry service and connecting the Greenway to Perth Amboy. Participants are encouraged to take time and enjoy the redeveloped Perth Amboy Harborside.
    • At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Wave will travel by a ferry provided by Venture Cruises of Perth Amboy to Tottenville on Staten Island. The Wave will be handed over to the NY State Committee in Tottenville.
