Bull Hill (Hudson Highlands)

Thanks to the students of the Lincoln High School Hiking Club of Brooklyn and their teacher (front right), Diana Dikovsky, some of the trails on Bull Hill are now cleaner by one full trash bag. Most of the trash was from the parking lot and a large cistern (or silo) on the Cornish Trail.

Route 17A at AT crossing

There was certainly a lot of fast food wrappers strewn evenly along the entire length of both sides of the road - 29 bags of litter.  Other assorted garbage also included an old washing machine and a large television console which were picked up before the photo was taken.

We would like to thank two neighbors living near the trail who joined five Trail Conference volunteers in cleaning up the trash and who helped to organize the clean up.

Introduction

Last’s year’s trash is starting to peek through the snow. Mark Sunday May 6th on your calendar and head out with like minded hikers to do some spring cleaning. Clubs who already have a hike scheduled that day are encouraged to gather up litter, especially at trail heads.

Litter Day was started by the late Elizabeth Levers in 1965. Until bottles and cans required a deposit, the amount of trash in the woods and along trails was staggering. After several years hiatus, the event returns with Karen DePodwin, a high school student, in charge. It is particularly fitting as Elizabeth encouraged young people to be active outdoors.

For clubs hike leaders or participants in club hikes, take a few garbage bags along and gather litter as you hike where ever you are. Register if you plan on participating so we know where you are going and not send others to the same place.

For individual hikers, click on "Sign  me up" and we will assign you to a group of other individual hikers cleaning up some place recommended by the parks or other individuals, "Tell us where the litter is". Litter Day is an opportunity to meet fellow hikers concerned with the condition of our trails.

Submit a receipt with the purchase of garbage bags circled to the Trail Conference office to be reimbursed.

When you get back from your Litter Day trip, please report what you found and who participated. The statistics and highlights are usually reported in the Trail Walker.
