Highlands Hike & Tour Series

The Highlands Coalition, Adirondack Mountain Club, Appalachian Mountain Club, New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, Sierra Club and Weis Wyanokie Wanderers invite you to hike the Critical Treasures of the Highlands. These hikes are open to the public and will explore some of the many special places in the Highlands region, the threats they are facing, and opportunities to help protect them.

Bring daypack, a liter of water, lunch, hiking boots, windbreaker, etc. The hike leader has the right to refuse anyone he/she feels is not sufficiently
prepared/equipped.

Extreme Threat Wyanokies Hike

5-6 miles, moderate pace

Join hike leaders Don Weise and Rob Lehmann for a circuit tour including two of the Highlands' most famous long distance trails. Enjoy incredible views of Monksville Reservoir, Sterling Forest, the Wyanokies and Ramapo Mountains as we tour endangered trail land, proposed to become a motorized recreation center in the near future. Meet at 9:00 am at NJ Audubon's Weis Ecology Ctr, 150 Snake Den Rd, Ringwood NJ for a short, pre-hike talk and slide presentation and then a short drive to the trailhead near Long Pond Ironworks. Along the hike there will learn of ongoing efforts to protect these and other critical treasures of the Highlands region. Trails: Highlands, Hewitt-Butler, Burnt Meadow, Horse Pond Mountain. Some steep climbs. Hike held rain (bring a raincoat!), snow (bring snowshoes!) or shine (bring a smile!). Directions:Take Route 287 North to exit 55 (Wanaque-Pompton Lakes). Turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Ringwood Avenue or Route 511 North. After approximately 4 miles, turn left onto Westbrook Road. This is the first left after the Skyline Family Diner on your right. Westbrook Road forks: bear to the left. After the fork, take the second left turn onto Snake Den Road. Snake Den Road also forks: bear to the left. Look for the Weis Ecology Center sign and outer parking lot about 1/3 mile from this fork. No need to register, just show up! Pequannock Watershed

Come join us as we celebrate the beauty of our very threatened Highlands region in observance of Earth Day 2002. Join hike leader Rob Lehmann, your guide Tom Gilbert and other leaders of the Highlands Coalition on a 5 mile, moderately paced hike and tour of a beautiful scenic area near the Pequannock Watershed that is the target of major redevelopment. Along the hike you will learn of ongoing efforts to protect the watershed and other critical treasures of the Highlands region. Meeting Place: The NY-NJ TC Headquarters on Ramapo Valley Road (Route 202) in Mahwah, NJ at 9:30AM or at the trailhead at 10:30AM. Directions to the NYNJTC: Just south of the intersection of I-287 and Route 17 on Route 202, just 100 yards east of Route 17. Directions to trailhead: Route 287 South about 15 miles to exit 52, Route 23 North, from Route 23, take the Echo Lake Road exit in West Milford. Travel to the end (approximately 2 miles) and turn left onto Macopin Road. Drive 1/4 mile and bear right onto Maple Road. Park at Maple Road Elementary School.. Rain cancels. Schunemunk Mountain

Come join us as we celebrate the beauty of our very threatened Highlands region. Join hike leader Rob Lehmann, guide Gary Haugland and other leaders of the Highlands Coalition on on a 7 mile, moderately paced hike and tour of Schunemunk Mountain including the Megaliths and the many beautiful spring flowers unique to The Highlands Region. Along the hike you will learn of ongoing efforts to protect the mountain and other critical treasures of the Highlands region. Meeting Place: The NY-NJ TC Headquarters on Ramapo Valley Road (Route 202) in Mahwah, NJ at 9:30AM or at the trailhead at 10:30AM. Directions to the NYNJTC: Just south of the intersection of I-287 and Route 17 on Route 202, just 100 yards east of Route 17. Directions to trailhead: Take the NY State Thruway to exit 16. Just after the toll booths at exit 16 veer right to take Route 32 north for about 7.5 miles until Taylor Road. Turn left onto Taylor Road. Taylor Road may not be marked. (a sign for the "Black Rock Fish & Game Club" may be at this turn, it is also a left turn soon after Creamery Road, which may be marked). After turning left onto Taylor Road, make the next left over a small bridge while staying on Taylor Road. Veer right at the next fork (do not turn onto Starr Road). Taylor Road crosses over the Thruway. From the initial left turn onto Taylor Road about .3 miles until you see a small parking area on the right side of the road. NOTE: As you approach the Black Rock Fish and Game Club on Rte 32 the Highlands Trail blazes (blue diamonds) will become apparent (the trail follows Rte 32 for a short distance) and can be followed to the parking area on Taylor Road. A Shortline bus out of Manhattan stops right at the turn off of Rt. 32 near Black Rock Fish and Game at 10:05am. Rain cancels. No need to register, just show up! E-mail leaders if any questions.

Torne Valley & Mountain Laurel

Come join us as we celebrate the beauty of our very threatened Highlands region. Join hike leader Rob Lehmann and guide Jill Hamell of The Highlands Coalition on a 7 mile, moderately paced hike and tour of Torne Valley including the spectacular annual display of Mountain Laurel. Along the hike you will learn of ongoing efforts to protect the valley and other critical treasures of the Highlands region. Meeting Place: The NY-NJ TC Headquarters on Ramapo Valley Road (Route 202) in Mahwah, NJ at 9:00AM or at the trailhead at 9:30 AM. Directions to the NYNJTC: Just south of the intersection of I-287 and Route 17 on Route 202, just 100 yards east of Route 17. Directions to trailhead: From the NY State thruway at exit 15A. At the exit turn left onto Route 17 North in Suffern. After about 2.5 miles, just north of the main street area in Sloatsburg, make a right onto Seven Lakes Drive. In less than 2 miles you will see the "Reeves Meadow Visitor Center" on the right. Park in the parking lot. Also there is bus transportation available that stops in Sloatsburg at approx. 9:11AM.
