Staten Island
On Saturday, June 1, as a part of the National
Trails Day celebrations, the Metro Area Trails committee will
conduct a trail cleaning on the Staten Island Greenbelt.
Committee members will assist by supervising the trail crews
and there will be breakfast for all workers. Goldman, Sachs
has donated the money for the trail cleaning equipment and the
breakfast. The entire event will be coordinated by Adena Long,
Greenbelt Administrator, New York City Department of Parks. The committee would like to thank
Goldman, Sachs for their generous contribution to this cause.

Event Details: The Goldman Sachs Community Team Works
Program is providing volunteers,
equipment & refreshments for the trail restoration project. A
native plant garden will be created and other areas in High Rock Park
may be cleared and beautified. A new map of Staten Island Greenbelt
trails (funded by the Keyspan Foundation) will be distributed.
Directions to Site: From Rte 278, go south on Bradley Ave.
to intersection with Brielle Ave. Bear right. At 2nd traffic light,
turn left onto Rockland Avenue. Turn left onto Nevada Avenue and
ascend hill to the end where you will reach High Rock Park's parking
lot.

Bridge at the Southfield Furnace in Sterling Forest
Ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 AM for the new bridge and trail connecting the
Indian Hill Trails to Sterling Forest. The bridge is just off Old
Orange Turnpike (County Rt. 19) about 1 mile NW of its beginning on
Rt. 17. There will be a tour of the Southfields Furnace and hikes on
some of the newly connected trail systems. See flyer

Event Details: This is your invitation to come together at The
Catskill
Center?s Platte Clove Preserve to celebrate National Trails Day and
dedicate
the new trail and footbridge constructed at the Preserve. The new
section of
trail has now been designated as part of New York?s Long Path. After
the
ceremony, join us for a hike along the new portion as we visit old
quarries
and have lunch at an overlook of the Hudson River Valley on the
eastern face
of Plattekill Mt. Bring lunch and water for this 5-mile moderate
hike.
Directions to Site: Take the NYS Thruway (I-87) to exit #20
(Saugerties).
Head west on State Route 212 towards Woodstock. In Centerville, turn
right
onto County Route 35 (heading north). Veer left onto County Route 33
(also
called Platte Clove Road) towards West Saugerties. Continue up the
steep
incline for 1.5 miles until you reach the top. On the right there is
a New
York State DEC parking area on dirt lane just off of Platte Clove Rd,
at the
top of the clove between Tannersville and West Saugerties.

FYI - The Ramapo Mountains are one of the Critical Treasures of the
Highlands, and preservation of these camps was very important. Much of
Mr. Schuber's outstanding remarks at a joint Bergen County/Highlands
Coalition press conference are being reprinted in the SUMmer 2002 issue
of the Coalition newsletter HIGH GROUND, which you can receive on
request, or see up on the web at http://www.highlandscoalition.org.
