Local Events June 4

New Jersey - North-Central - Basic trail maintenance and a hike in West Milford, New Jersey - Beginner

Description:

A day of basic trail maintenance training and trail conditioning on the Hanks East Trail. The day will start with refreshments, an hour of instruction on basic trail maintenance at the NWCDC Headquarters off Echo Lake Road followed by a quick shuttle over to the Hanks East Trail. There a couple hours of trail maintenance will be completed and the day will end with a hike around the beautiful Hanks Pond.

Park: Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corp. (Pequannock Watershed) (private), West Milford, New Jersey

Meeting Time: Meet at 9 am;Trail Maintenance at 10 am; Hanks Pond hike at 1 PM

Skill level required: No previous trail work experience is required

Tools needed: Clippers, loppers or hand saws if you have them (not required, but useful).

What should participants bring? : Lunch, Water, Work Gloves. Sturdy shoes and long trousers recommended.


New Jersey - North-East - Ramapo Reservation/Boy Scout Camp Glen Gray

Description: This will be a strenuous 13 mile hike done at a brisk pace. We will explore newly re-opened trails in land recently acquired by Bergen County in the seldom hiked Ramapo Reservation and Boy Scout Camp Glen Gray.

What should participants bring?:  minimum 3 quarts water, lunch, snacks, footware and attire suitable for hiking

Meeting Time: 9:05 am - will meet the 8:15 Shortlline bus from Port Authority.

New Jersey - North-East - Trail clearing of a new section of the Long Path on top of the Palisades in New Jersey - Beginner to Moderate

Description:

We will clear new sections of Trail to locate the Long Path away from the highway and closer to the river views.

Park: Palisades Interstate Park - New Jersey section, Alpine, New Jersey

Meeting Time: 10 am

Max # Participants: 15

Min # Participants: 10

Skill Levels Required: All skill levels will be welcome

Tools needed: Some extra clippers, saws and weed whackers will be available

What should participants bring? : Trail lunch, beverage, work gloves, tools for clipping, small saws, loppers, weed whackers etc. if you have them. Also, it's advisable to wear long pants and long sleeved shirts.


New Jersey - West - New Trail Construction near the town of Hope in Warren County, New Jersey - Moderate

Description:

Trail Construction on the new Warren Trail. We will be constructing the first new section of the newly defined Warren Trail in Warren County, New Jersey.  Work will consist of trail clearing: clipping brush, dragging away fallen trees and branches, and trimming back tree branches in order to define this new trail through a currently undeveloped area of Jenny Jump State Forest. Note: morning rain or threat of rain throughout the day cancels.

New York City - Basic trail maintenance and training in Staten Island, New York City - Beginner

Description:

A day of basic trail maintenance training and trail work on this surprisingly beautiful trail. Work will consist of clipping back trail, some minor rerouting and tread surface improvement which may involve installing puncheon planking and/or wood chips in some areas.

Park: New York City Parks - Staten Island Greenbelt Trail, Staten Island, New York

New York City - Basic trail maintenance and training in Queens, New York City - Beginner

Description:

A day of basic trail maintenance training and trail work on these woodland trails. Work will consist of trash removal, clearing brush and removal of fire rings.

Park: New York City Parks - Alley Pond Park, Queens, New York

Meeting Time: 9 am (Continues on June 5)

End Time: 11 am

New York City - High Bridge Park (no registration needed)

Description:

In the morning we will be cleaning the Old Croton Trail- removing trash along the trail from 173rd Street -158th Street.  We will be repairing the switchback trail we build just North of the Old Croton Trail to give people better access to the Old Croton itself. We will also be concentrating on the Highbridge Plaza Area in order to remove invasive plants and replace them with native species- so there's some forest restoration involved. We also will be planting some native plant species in a designated area (still to be announced). 

Park: High Bridge Park

meeting place: Meeting on 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue, Highbridge Rec Center. Take A or C to 168th Street - Exit at 169th Street. Walk North to 173rd Street- Walk East /a.k.a. make a right and walk straight until you reach the Highbridge Recreation Center - it should be right in front of you.

Meeting Time: 9 am

End Time: 1 pm

Max. # Participants: 150 ( but we will always take more) for the volunteer project -  as many as who want to participate for the tours of the park

Tools needed: NYC Parks Department will be providing the tools & supplies

What should participants bring? : (lunch, beverage, work gloves, etc.) a snack or bagged luch is fine - NYC Parks will provide gloves along with tools but people can always bring their own

New York City - Forest Park (Queens)

Event Details: We plan 2 intermediate hikes. One hike will be 1.7 miles with some interpretive stops (Blue Trail 9am). The second will be 2.4 miles of brisk walking with no stops (Orange Trail at 11am). Pls bring snack and water. Wear long pants and sturdy shoes.

Directions to Site: Participants must pre-register. Directions will be mailed after registration.


New York - East of the Hudson

Description:

Work on different types of bridge building near the shores of the Hudson River in Montrose, New York - Beginner to Moderate

This will be a bridge building project in a park with beautiful views on the Hudson River shore. Learn how to construct bog bridging and bridges with handrails. There is some possibility of wet feet and getting very muddy! The trail is part of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail and Westchester County River Walk.

Description:

Trail Construction using sidehilling techniques with grub hoes.

Wappingers Greenway Trail Construction - This ongoing development of new trails in the Village of Wappingers Falls, NY will continue with sidehill trail excavation on the Reese Audubon Nature Reserve (using grub hoes).

New York - West of the Hudson South - Basic trail maintenance and some construction in Harriman State Park, New York - Beginner to Moderate

Description:

Parker Cabin Hollow Trail is a restored trail in the eastern central part of the park needs basic maintenance; clipping and branch trimming as well as some construction which may include stone stepping across a stream, some sidehill benching and grading.

Park: Harriman Bear Mountain State Park, Southfields, New York

West of the Hudson North - Bridge building, trail hardening and some trail clearing near Albany, New York - Beginner to Moderate

Description:

Construction of a bridge on the new Salisbury Trail which connects the Long Path to Thompson's Lake State Park and the Thacher Nature Center. Additionally, trails in the area will be trimmed and hardened. This is a joint project of the Friends of Thacher and Thompsons Lake State Parks, the Albany Chapter of the ADK and the Long Path North Hiking Club.

Description:

Gertrude's Nose Trail

This will be a final work trip to complete adjustments on this beautiful trail along the Millbrook Ridge in Minnewaska S. P. Work will involve basic trail clearing such as clipping back trail clearance as well as some construction work doing sidehill benching and rock work, (possibly incorporating the use of mechanical winch systems).
