Local Events June 2

  • Alley Pond Park, Queens NY—Come help with trail repair and plantings. Families and youth welcome.
  • Port Jervis, NY—Learn the basics of building and maintaining hiking trails! The workshop will consist of three hours of classroom activity in the Port Jervis Library and proceed on to work in groups and visit nearby trails and do hands-on trail work. Register at http://www.nynjtc.org/workshops/maintainers/s2007.html
  • Warren Trail, Jenny Jump State Forest—>Try-A-Trail-Crew Day. Come out and experience trail work first hand. Learn first hand side-hill construction and other basic trail building techniques. No experience is required: tools, training and fun will be provided. 9:00 am meeting time.
  • Harriman State Park-- Meet 9:30 AM in the Anthony Wayne North Parking Lot for a 7.5 mile loop in Harriman. This hike is sponsored by ADK Ramapo and led by NYNJTC Pete Tilgner. Only heavy rain cancels.
  • Storm King State Park: The Stillman Trail, East of the Mountain Road parking lot, has been closed for over a year because of the bridge that has deteriorated. The West Hudson North Crew will be rebuilding the bridge this spring. We could use a small army on National Trails Day to help us carry in the building materials, lay the decking across the bridge span and attach the railings. No experience is necessary. Cordless drills and socket wrenches (for 5/8" and 1/2" bolts) will be the tools of the day. Contact Denise Vitale if you are interested in joining us: WHNTrails@aol.com or 845-738-2126.
  • Delaware Water Gap: The NYNJ Trail Conference NJ Appalachian Trail Management Committee, along with the National Park Service and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy are planning a special day’s event to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The program will include both long and short hikes on the AT and connected trails, a slide show presentation on the Appalachian Trail, and the kick-off in our area of the National Park Service’s Appalachian Trail Junior Ranger Program. Through the National Park Service Junior Ranger program, children and their families are engaged together in fun, hands-on, self-directed learning activities that enhance their National Park experience, create fond, long-lasting memories and promote new appreciation for our Nation and its treasures. National Parks tell a story that must be instilled in each generation, beginning by engaging the youngest in our society in the majesty, importance and splendor of America's National Parks. Engaging American children in these dynamic places can have a profound impact on their lives and is the way to ensure a broad constituency for National Parks into the future. The day’s events will begin at 10am at various locations in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area adjacent to the Appalachian Trail.

Please see www.nps.gov/dewa or contact Gene Giordano at trailwork@appalachiantrail-nj.org for more information or to receive a full listing of locations for the day’s events.

  • Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY--The final mile of the Highlands Trail in Orange County NY, which will connect the existing trail on Storm King Mountain with the Hudson River, will soon be completed.  A ribbon-cutting ceremony and inaugural hike are scheduled for Sunday June 3 at 1 PM at the riverfront in the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson.  For details contact Gary Haugland at 845-534-5053.
