The Trail Conference and many of our member clubs will celebrate National Trails Day by offering trail work opportunities and hikes that range from beginner level to experienced. See below.

Local Events June 7

  • Bear Mountain Trails Project
    Celebrate the day by helping to rebuild the first section of the first national scenic hiking trail in the country:the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain. Work available suitable for all levels of ability.

  • Try a Trail Crew with West Hudson South Crew
    Project Harriman State Park on the Pine Meadow Trail. Start time: 9:30am
    Beginners welcome. This is a great project for people interested in learning how a trail crew works and in meeting other trail builders.  Bring your lunch, plenty of water, gloves and sturdy work shoes or boots. All tools, materials and training will be provided.

  • Try a Trail Crew with West Jersey Crew
    Douglas Trail in Worthington State Forest, NJ. Start time: 9:00am
    Come out and experience trail work firsthand with the New York - New Jersey Conference volunteers. Help build water management devices (water bars and check dams) on the Douglass Trail in Worthington State Forest. Bring your lunch, plenty of water, gloves and sturdy work shoes or boots. All tools, materials and training will be provided. Beginners are welcome.

  • Metro Crew Bridge-building in Alley Pond Park, Queens
    June 6, 7 & 8 (Fri. Sat. & Sun.)
    Alley Park, Eagle Scout Projects
    Meet 9am at the upper parking lot, across from the Sanitation Department, off Winchester Blvd.
    Join the crew and Eagle Scouts in building two bridges (17’ and 30’ long).

  • AT Project in Dutchess County
    Ollie Simpson of the Dutchess-Putnam AT Committee will lead participants on a refurbishment of an AT side trail known as the Beekman Uplands Loop, which was a former route of the AT. The trail is in need of blueberry and mountain laurel trimming as well as water management on the northern end. Meet at 9am at the Rt. 55 AT parking area (west of Pawling, NY).

  • Ringwood Ramapo Trail Relocation Project
    A crew of hikers and mountain bikers will work collaboratively to relocate a ¾ mile section of the trail off of an old eroded woods road and put it on a narrow path traveling over many rock outcrops; a big improvement on a much used section of trail in the Skylands area.   • Long Path North Trail Maintenance
    Join the LP North Hiking Club on a trail maintenance outing on LP section 26—Huntersfield Ridge.
    Work will include clearing blowdowns. New volunteers welcome! Call for details.

  • Union County Hiking Club Plans Event at Watchung Reservation, NJ
    UCHC plans a day of guided nature walks and/or trail projects at Watchung Reservation.

  • Hike South Mountain Reservation, Millburn, NJ, with Union County Hiking Club
    Union County Hiking Club plans a moderate hike for intermediate hikers; 2-3 hours, with several hills, on the yellow trail through a pine forest. Meet at 10am at Tulip Springs parking, Brookside Ave.

  • Hike Ringwood/Skylands, NJ with Woodland Trail Walkers
    Moderate 7 miles; meet at 10am at Ringwood Manor; call to confirm.

  • Hike the Sussex Branch Trail in the Kittatinnies with Adventures for Women
    Easy to moderate hike; meet at 10am, out by 2pm. Call 973-644-3592 or go to www.adventuresforwomen.org for details and to register. 
  • Hike Hyde Park, NY, Trails with Adirondack Mountain Club, Mid-Hudson Chapter
    Moderately easy, about 7 miles.  Meet at 10:30 at Poughkeepsie train station (will meet NYC train). Shuttle to Hyde Park. Rain may cancel. Call leader if in doubt. Joint with AMC.

  • New Jersey Conservation Foundation - National Trails Day Hike - West Milford, Passaic County
    Celebrate National Trails Day with a moderate to strenuous hike over rugged terrain to a picturesque highlands reservoir at the Apshawa Preserve. Wear hiking boots and bring water. Rain or shine!

    Meeting time: 9 a.m.
    Duration: two hours
    Meeting place: parking lot near intersection of Macopin and Northwood roads
