Tuxedo - Commuters who use the makeshift park-and-ride at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 17A will be moved to the Red Apple Rest on Route 17 this week.
The temporary relocation, effective March 31, will permit the state Department of Transportation to transform the dirt lot into a modern park-and-ride with lights, shelter, landscaping and, of course, blacktop.
The $500,000 project, four years in the making, is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete.
Michael Grattini of Short Line said the commuter bus company was putting notices on cars at the lot, as well as emailing customers and asking them to spread the word of the pending change.
Short Line and the DOT arranged last fall to rent a portion of the Red Apple's parking lot for commuters to use during the construction.
After commuters made the switch, the contractor reported it was too late in the season to obtain asphalt and pushed the paving back to spring. Short Line then gave commuters a choice of where they wanted to park through the winter and they chose their old lot.
