Are the rumors true that refilling and reusing some types of plastic bottles can cause health problems?
Facts:
- Reuse of any closed container always carries a risk of contamination from improper cleaning.
- Some bottle materials may leach undesirable chemicals into the liquid. This depends on the material, the liquid, temperature and the length of storage. Acidic or hot liquids need special containers.
- All of leaching effects are small, so the danger is more related to frequency of use/amount consumed and that children are more sensitive to small, cumulative doses.
