The Internal Revenue Service, the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration and the Health Care Financing Administration have proposed regulations that might restrict health coverage for participation in "risky" sports. It is not clear whether this might cover hiking, but almost any sport can be performed in a risky manner, e.g. backcountry winter hiking.

Neil Woodworth is working with AHS to try to prevent this from becoming law.
