Crunch time on Casinos
|
 |
On Thursday, Dec 16, the Sullivan County legislature will vote on whether we want FIVE casinos here, as Gov Pataki is proposing in his "bill of necessity" legislation. The state legislature in Albany will then vote on the issue later in Dec or in Jan. If the state votes affirmatively, five casinos are IN.
We are asking everyone who doesn't want this to happen to come to the Sullivan county legislative meeting on Thursday and to bring everyone you know who also doesn't want five monster casinos in their backyard.
We're hoping for an enormous presence at the meeting. You don't have to sign up to speak, unless you want to. At one point, one of our speakers may say something like: "Will those of you opposed to the casinos please stand..." That's the most that would be asked of you.
We need numbers, since it's going to be a very difficult vote for at least some of the legislators. There will be a ton of press coverage, and a show of support for those who vote no will be of great importance.
PLEASE--if you and your friends have never come out before, do so on Thursday. Let's try to pack the room.
It's Thursday, Dec. 16th, 2:00 pm sharp (if you want to speak, try to get there a few minutes early to sign up), Government Center, 100 North St., Monticello, 2nd Floor, Legislative Room. From Route 17, take exit 104 and tavel straight to North Street; make a left into the Govt. center before reaching Broadway.
If you want any more info, give call at 434-7366.
Sen. Bonacic is the point man in Albany on this issue. He has said he will recommend the legislature follow the lead of Sullivan County. Sen. Bruno, the majority leader, has said he will follow Bonacic's recommendation.
So this is real crunch time. If Pataki's legislation passes, there will be no environmental reviews, no appeals, no nothing, since the end run nature of this legislation will bypass both the SEQRA and NEPA processes. Didn't think that could happen? Guess again. Sullivan County will become Casino County.
