Congress is reviewing their list of funding priorities for the Fiscal Year 2009 omnibus appropriations bill. This bill is expected to pass early in the new year, possibly as soon as late January. However, all input needs to be in to lawmakers no later than December 19, 2008
The Highlands Conservation Act, the Forest Legacy Program and the Land and Water Conservation Fund are the primary federal sources of funding for supporting land conservation, and park and recreation projects that protect America's natural heritage and increase the health and quality of life for all Americans. The programs are especially important to the eastern forests of the United States because of increased pressure and threats of conversion to non-forest uses.
All eight Highlands senators and over thirty members of congress supported full funding of $11 million for the Highlands Conservation Act.
Make sure these programs receive sufficient funding in the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill, and receive meaningful increases from FY 2008 levels.
