Issues
- Quarrying on or near trail systems are a continuing problem in
both New York and New Jersey. Quarries grossly affect the scenery
and frequently are a continuing source of noise pollution that disturbs
the notion of "a quiet hike in the woods". Of course there
are other issues related to wildlife habitat destruction and water
polution as well. Currently quarries or the threat of new quarries
are affecting our trails in several regions:
- National Scenic Highway status for Palisades
Interstate Parkway and Taconic
Parkway: Both parkways are creating management plans for retaining
and/or enhancing the character of these roads. Both have significant
sections of road through parks where we maintain trails as well
as being used to reach these and other trails. The Trail Conference
is represented on both of these committees and is open to suggestions that
can be made at their meetings. Some issues are:
- Hiker safety at trail crossings
- Viewshed protection (including cell towers, power lines, etc.)
- Trails in the highway corridor (both hiking and multi-use)
- Stewart
Park and Reserve Coalition SPARC (See also ADK link below)
- General Obligations Law - These laws protect landowners from suits
related to the landowner allowing public access to hiking trails
on their land. In NY the laws do not give enough protection to the
landowners. The Outdoor
Coalition for New York is working to strengthen those laws. See

Liability, A Primer For New York Forest Landowners.
