Volunteer Committee Meeting 1/6/11

Minutes – Volunteer Committee        January 6, 2011

Present:  Dan Van Engel, Catherine Gemmell, Bob Jonas, Estelle Anderson, Chris Connolly, Ed Goodell  Guest:  Larry Wheelock

DVE, RJ: Volunteer Satisfaction Survey is being formulated by Jeremy Apgar.  

Ed G:  commented that Kevin Melchione wants to phone new members to recruit for volunteer positions.  He wants to retain new members, however, it’s agreed that we need to have available positions to fill with these new volunteers.  

Bandanas:  We now have 300 Trail Crew bandanas. They should be handed out to crew members after they go out on 3 work trips.  The crew chiefs will be notified and the bandanas will be available at next Trails Council.   The chiefs must provide recipients names so it can be noted in Ebase.  
Larry will notify WH-North, Estelle will notify others.   Photos will be required when they wear the bandanas – for Trail Walker.   (LW, EA)

CG:  Discussion of Volunteer Committee objectives to date
    Vacancy rate in 2009 was 7.9%, current rate is 8.1%.  

CC:  We should have chair & supervisor vacancy rate as we may need
        to concentrate efforts in those areas.

CG:  Objectives:  Increase number of volunteers hours and maintain vacancy rate below 10%.  

Job Descriptions:  EA has partial done; need AT jobs, Crew jobs.

CG:  Evaluation of training programs.   EG thinks Volunteer Committee should handle all evaluations that come in with sign-in sheets for programs.

LW will set up a system for WH evaluation forms from workshops, summarize the forms.  This could be used throughout.  

Then the Committee is to evaluate the recommendations and comments.

CC:  re: NJ-Volunteer Insurance:  If NJ will have a similar type of insurance as is in effect for NY Park volunteers, this will change Volunteer Handbook.
