Temporary AT Relo near Taconic Parkway |
| ABOUT | JOIN | PUBLICATIONS | TRAILS | ADVOCACY |
The Taconic Parkway in the vacinity of Miller Hill Road is being improved from an at grade crossing to a full interchange. When completed the AT will go under the Taconic on Miller Hill Road removing one of the most dangerous road crossings on the entire AT.
The AT from the RPH Cabin to Rock Ledge Rd is now closed and rerouted onto Hortontown and Miller Hill roads. This took effect Feb. 3. VERY extensive clearing along Miller Hill and the Taconic has started as part of the first phase of construction of the Taconic-Miller Hill intersection - it's amazing the number of trees that have been felled in just one week. This trail closure is anticipated to last through August, 1999. I was pleased to find out that the trail will only be closed for six months, but hikers will still be walking through a construction zone until summer, 2000.
People should be aware that vehicle congestion may be encountered on the Taconic, though no weekend work is scheduled as of now, and parking on local roads will probably be very scarce. Hikers using this section should use caution, be alert to construction vehicles, and follow directions from construction personnel.

The relo is shown in purple at the left. RPH Cabin is the "S" on
Hortontown Road. Continue north on Hortontown Road to the first intersection with Miller
Hill Road. Turn right on Miller Hill Road and proceed though the construction zone,
crossing the Taconic carefully. Just across the Taconic, Rock Ledge Road is a dirt road to
the left. Proceed on the current trail which follows it briefly before turning off to the
right to climb Hosner Mountain. The current AT is 0.3 miles with the temporary relocation being about 0.5 miles. |
