Public Hearing on Thalle Industries quarry October 29, 1998

NY DEC is lead agency on the Thalle Industries, Inc. application for expanding their current quarrying operation on Route 9 in Fishkill. A public scoping meeting for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) will be held on Thursday, October 29, 1998 at 7:30 PM at Town of Fishkill Town Hall, 401 Route 52, Fishkill, NY 12524.

A draft scope of issues for the DEIS, prepared by the project sponsor, is available for review at DEC's Region 3 office, 21 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, NY 12561. Written comments will be accepted until November 6, 1998.

The project involves the expansion of the Thalle Industries, Inc. rock quarry located on the east side of US Route 9 approximately one and three quarters miles south of Interstate 84 in the Town of Fishkill, Dutchess County. The proposed 20.1 acre expansion area is located immediately east of the existing Thalle quarry operation.

For more information please contact William E. Steidle, Deputy Regional Permit Administrator, NY DEC, 21 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, NY 12561; (914) 256-3053.

Information to hikers from the East Hudson Management Committee:

The current Thalle quarry is very visible from many places on Fishkill Ridge and the noise of the operation is very apparent. The Thalle quarry is currently running out of rock to mine without the proposed expansion which would cut further into the hill and raise the height of the quarry, making it more visible. The Thalle quarry is on the opposite side of Route 9 from the proposed Sour Mountain quarry  which the Trail Conference and Scenic Hudson have been opposing. From a hiker point of view, Thalle is worse than Sour Mountain which will be largely invisible to hikers on Fishkill Ridge and most of the noise is likely to be reflected away from the trails. Both quarries degrade the scenic qualities of the region when viewed from either the roads or surrounding hills and will continue to do so until the mining operations are finished in 30-150 years and reclaimed.
