BACKGROUND:
Over the last 10 months, the Trust for Public Land, a national
non-profit land conservation organization, facilitated
a public-private partnership to protect 295
acres of land in the Farny Highlands. The $7
million acquisition drew upon 10 different funding sources,
including local, county, state, federal, non-profit and foundation
dollars. The property connects state-owned land in the Wildcat
Ridge Wildlife Management Area with the Beaver Brook, which sits
atop an acquifer that provides residents of Rockaway Township with
their drinking water. The Farny Highlands is home to 907 species
of plants and animals, including 71 at-risk species
such as the bog turtle.
