December 18
AT now open for entire trail, ME->GA.
November 29
No known fires at this point but we still need more rain to really
lessen the fire danger.
November 22 Fire in Hubbard - Perkins
There has been a lingering fire on Round Mountain in the Hubbard -
Perkins Conservation Area (East of Hudson) for the last three weeks.
November 18 Open fires and smoking on the Appalachian Trail
(lifted Dec. 18)
Due to high fire danger and in accordance with state fire closures,
National Park Service lands along the Appalachian Trail are closed to
the lighting or maintaining of fires and closed to smoking.
Closure ordered pursuant to authorities granted under 36 Code of
Federal Regulations 1.5, 1.7, 2.13, 2.21
Pamela Underhill, Park Manager Appalachian National Scenic Trail
For those not completely familiar with the AT land ownership, the
trail corridor is owned by a mix of local, county and state parks as
well as lands owned directly by the National Park Service. Although
the closure strictly applies only to the NPS lands, the Trail
Conference highly advises similar restraint on all trail lands - AT
and non-AT.
May 10
Due to the lack of recent rainfall and no predictions
of significant rain, we are now in extreme fire danger. Nothing is
closed yet, but watch this file for reports.
See Fire threat breathes down on state parks
for a current status report in the Times Herald Record (5/10).
Help be the eyes of forest while you are out hiking. Report not
only fires but campfires and people who look like they are unaware of
the danger, e.g. anyone you see smoking in the woods.
