It is with pleasure that we announce that Tom Gilbert has been
selected as the new Executive Director of the Highlands Coalition. Tom
will begin his new role on April 15, 2002. Tom has demonstrated vision
and leadership in his association with the Highlands Coalition. In
November 2001, Tom was elected Chair of the Regional Board of the
Coalition, which was formally established at that time. From January
of 2000 until then, Tom served as Chair of the Coalition's New Jersey
Steering Committee. Tom will be leaving his current position as
Central Appalachian Conservation Director of the Appalachian Mountain
Club, where he established the AMC's Mid-Atlantic Conservation program
from its inception in May of 1998. He served as AMC regional
coordinator in the campaign to revitalize the federal Land and Water
Conservation Fund, and developed AMC conservation programs in the
Highlands and Eastern Forests. Prior to his work with AMC, while
completing a Master's Degree in Natural Resources at the University of
Vermont, Tom served as Conservation Chair of the VT Chapter of the
Sierra Club, where he helped to secure a ban on the aerial application
of herbicides on Vermont's forests, and regulations governing
large-scale timber harvesting in the State. Tom is a also graduate of
Green Corps, the Field School for Environmental Organizing, where he
underwent a year of intensive, hands-on training in the skills of
grassroots organizing and advocacy. He went on to develop the Outreach
Program at the Vermont Natural Resources Council, where he coordinated
the outreach efforts of the Northern Forest Alliance in Vermont to
build a network of activists working to protect the region's forests.
Tom will continue to work out of the AMC office in Washington
Crossing, New Jersey, while the AMC will act as the fiscal agent for
