The Trail Conference Receives $10,610 Grant for Trail work in New Jersey

The NY-NJ Trails Conference has received word from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection offices, in Trenton that our grant proposal requesting funds to cover the costs of tools and staff time needed to complete various trail projects in northern N. J. was approved. This grant came through the National Recreational Trails Program, a part of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, and provides monies to states for developing trails and trail facilities. These funds, which are the only federal ones that are completely devoted to trail projects, are generated by a federal gas tax attributed to off-highway vehicle use.

A variety of trail construction tools will be purchased to supplement our supply for the N. J. Trail Crews and the balance will be used to cover staff time required to oversee trail construction and maintenance needs throughout northern N. J.

This funding will go a long way to enhance our ability to complete work that we might not, otherwise have been able to tackle. Being able to cut rock and move large timbers and boulders will help us create stable and safe trails that will be around for many generations.

Our gratitude is due to the N. J. DEP’s office of Natural Lands Management and the State Trails Council, under whose advisement these funds are distributed. We should, also thank the various park managements in northern N. J. for their encouragement and help in acquiring these funds.
