Web Redesign

You are now looking at Version 3 of the Trail Conference web site. It is a minor redesign that visibly affects mostly the home page. There are numerous other technical changes which will make updating the web pages easier. You can recognize a V3 page by the V3 on the last line of the screen. The top menu bar has had some of the items renamed to more accurately reflect their content. The gray search area at the bottom of the screen has also changed to expand its possibilities. Some of the items on the left menu of the home page have also moved, e.g. look for the Recent Changes at the bottom of the screen.

There are also changes to allow users to customize the sizes of screen fonts for those of us whose eyes can no longer read the fine print. The previous version used fixed size fonts which would not allow you to change the font sizes with View->Text Size (Internet Explorer) or View->TextZoom (Netscape). In fact it has an even more powerful facility to change the sizes only for the TC web pages. See the bottom gray area on the home page for:

where you can click on the various sizes of A and change the text sizes. These settings are remembered from session to session. Try it on the line above.

A number of pages have moved so that if you have bookmarked them, you will get a page that will tell you the new address and transfer you to the new page after a few seconds.

Technobabble: We are changing from using Microsoft FrontPage to Macromedia Dreamweaver which has a stronger template mechanism for generating new pages. It has a companion product, Contribute, which allows others to generate new pages or modify old pages but are constrained to follow the templates. It and Dreamweaver also have mechanisms for allowing multiple people to modify pages without them interfering with each others' changes.

Over the next few months, several Assistant Webmasters will join me in bringing you more and better information. Additional volunteers are welcome.

Most of the pages are still Version 2 and they will be changed as they get updated or as time is available. There are still a few Version 1 pages around as well. There are also pages that have none of the usual features of V1 or V2 like search and menu bars. If you stumble on one of these, let me know as they are hard to find.
