Parking for Breakneck Ridge Trail

Picture of something

Hikers who wish to park at the trailhead of the Breakneck Ridge Trail on Route 9D should be aware that recent publicity has highlighted the popularity of this already-overused trail.  As a result, the parking area just north of the trailhead fills up very early, especially on weekends.

On a recent weekend, it was noted that all parking spaces were occupied, and some drivers were parking along the highway shoulder. One such driver, when pulling away from the shoulder, was unable to see an oncoming vehicle exiting from the northbound lane of the tunnel, and a serious accident resulted.

Please be extra cautious when parking or walking in this area. Traffic on Route 9D does not always slow down for pedestrians.  There are many other trails and trailheads in the East Hudson area, so if you are unable to safely park at the Breakneck Ridge Trail trailhead, you might want to consider one of the other trails (see East Hudson Trails Map #102) as an alternative.
