Title

Compromise atop Palisades to serve region

Body

The height restriction in Englewood Cliffs was in keeping with more than a century of united effort by many community, political and philanthropic leaders to protect the natural beauty of the Palisades. With approval of the local planning board, this restriction has been waived for LG Electronics.

Thus, the scenic qualities of lands adjacent to the building site, acreage conserved for public benefit by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, are threatened by significant negative visual impact. The park commission is opposed to the 143-foot structure and is joined in this resistance by other organizations, including the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs, Scenic Hudson, the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. . . LG Electronics officials could ask their architects to design a splendid new low-rise corporate headquarters that would be below the nearby Palisades tree line.
