Allamuchy Mountain State Park offers several marked hiking trails, including a section of the Highlands Trail.  It adjoins Stephens State Park, which has camping and picnicking facilities.

Park Description:

Embracing most of the Allamuchy Mountain upland between County 517 and the Musconetcong River, and bisected by I-80 near Exit 19, Allamuchy Mountain and Stephens State Parks together comprise nearly 10,000 acres.   Stephens State Park has camping, fishing, and picnic facilities; Allamuchy Mountain State Park is more undeveloped and offers hunting and fishing opportunities.  Waterloo Village, a restoration of Andover Forge and once a busy port along the Morris Canal, is situated in Allamuchy Mountain S.P. 

Trails Overview:

Each of the three sections of these state parks has networks of hiking trails.  An overall web map is viewable using the link near the top of this page.

  • The Allamuchy Natural Area, consisting of 2,440 acres around Deer Park Pond south of I-80, has 14 miles of marked trails that can be combined to form a variety of loop hikes.  Use "Contact Information" below to locate a trail map -- Deer Park -- including descriptions of marked trails.
  • The developed area of Stephens State Park, east of Waterloo Road, offers several marked loop trails that begin from the park office, as well as a section of the Highlands Trail.
  • The portion of Allamuchy Mountain State Park north of I-80 has a section of the Sussex Branch [rail] Trail, a 4.4-mile section of the Highlands Trail, and an extensive 20-mile network of unmarked woods roads.  Use "Contact Information" to view a trail map -- Deer Park North -- focused on this area including trail descriptions.

The park has a 3-mile watertrail for boating or floating on the Musconetcong River.

  • Allamuchy Mountain State Park is located three miles north of Hackettstown between Willow Grove/ Waterloo Road [Route 604] on the east, Route 517 on the west, and Cranberry Lake [Route 206] on the north
  • Stephens State Park is located on Willow Grove Street [Route 604], 2 miles east of Hackettstown or 7.5 miles west of Route 206 on Waterloo Road [Route 604]

Waterloo Village -- some buildings now reopened

The 26-building Waterloo Village was closed by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection in 2006.  According to press reports, as of June 2010 the DEP has reopened the Lenape Village and three buildings -- Smith's Store, the Rutan Cabin and the Canal Museum.  For more information see A map of the village is included in this article.
