Park Description:

A popular tourist destination, the Barnegat Lighthouse is on the northern tip of Long Beach Island. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse yields a panoramic view of Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, Long Beach Island and, of course, the Atlantic Ocean. The area is a wonderful place to observe many species of birds, especially during the spring and fall migration.

The lighthouse is open throughout the year, but hours and days vary according to the season. See the park’s web page [Contact Information]. A small fee is charged to enter the lighthouse, but no fee to enter the park.

Trails Overview:

This is not a place to visit for an extended hike. The Maritime Forest Trail, a self-guided loop trail through one of the last remnants of maritime forest on Long Beach Island, is only 1/5-mile long. On top of the south Jetty, a 1,033-foot concrete walkway with handrails provides access for people with disabilities.

Hikers should consider Island Beach State Park [13 miles of trails] situated just across the inlet with a view of Barnegat Lighthouse instead of from it.  Be aware, it takes more than an hour to travel by car from one park to the other.

Directions:

Take the Garden State Parkway to exit 63. From Route 72 east, turn left onto Long Beach Blvd. and then left onto Broadway. The park entrance is on the right. See also the Map tab at the top of this page.
