A major victory in the quest for a stable source of funding for open space preservation in New Jersey N.J. voters to decide on funding open space through dedicated revenue
With an overwhelming vote of legislator support, on Thursday, July 30, 1998, the New Jersey Senate and Assembly approved a measure that will have New Jersey voters decide in November whether to enact and dedicate a stable source of funding for open space, farmland and other natural resource preservation.
The measure, which asks voters to amend the state Constitution, would dedicate up to $98 million in sales tax revenues annually for the next 10 years to preserve up to half of the privately owned undeveloped land in the state.
"It's a wonderful victory," said former Assemblywoman Maureen Ogden, who headed the Governor's Council on New Jersey Outdoors, about the chance of getting a stable source of funding after trying for the past 15 years.
What You Can Do: Each New Jersey resident now has the power to enact the stable source of funding. Vote "Yes" to the ballot question in the November elections. For more details, contact Pride In Our Parks, (201) 836-0985.
