The LaFarge property : 150 acres of NY-NJ Trail Conference Land in Summitville, NY (Sullivan County) that must be cleared of trash, tires, shingles, RR ties, partial foundations, a couple pick-up trucks and even a boat so it can be turned over to the NYS DEC and added to the Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest. Before it became a trash magnet, the LaFarge property housed a cement factory (this is where the partial foundations come in) and even a 19th century train depot. More recently it has become a haven for unwanted trash--it has easy road access and lacks regular stewards. The DEC Rangers and the local police help to deter unlawful dumpers, but the property needs regular supervision, which will happen when it becomes part of the Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest.

Trash Bash I a Smashing Success: 15 brave volunteers spent Sunday 11/12 consolidating trash. The group collected 379 tires (about 3 3/4 tons) and at least twice the equivalent in trash. Check out pictures and consider joining us for Trash Bash II in a few weeks.

LaFarge location : Along the east side of Rt. 209 in Summitville, NY and off Ferguson Road (which turns into Summitville-Roosa Gap Road and heads up over Wurtsboro Ridge). It is north of the Wurstboro airport and just north of the canal crossing, and about halfway between Wurstsboro and Spring Glen.
The Cleanup: The Trail Conference will hire a professional team that has worked successfully on DEC cleanup projects, but can save $1000s if volunteers can begin consolidating the trash.
Please support the Trail Conference at the TRASH BASH in early December.
