Description:
The Red Trail is a "lollipop"-loop trail that passes through attractive woods for nearly its entire length. The trailhead is at St. Patrick's Place and Richmond Road, adjacent to Historic Richmond Town-a collection of buildings reflecting 300 years of American history-which may be reached by the S74 bus from the St. George ferry terminal. The trail briefly joins the Blue, White and Yellow trails at several places along its route. One highlight of historical interest along the hike is the ruins of a house on Heyerdahl Hill, built in the first half of the nineteenth century by the Heyerdahl family. An orange blaze points an unmarked trail that leads to the site 500 feet from the Red Trail. The start of the loop is reached at 3.1 miles. To return to the trailhead, hikers should turn right and follow the red blazes back to Richmond Road and St. Patrick's Place, making a total distance for the hike of 4.2 miles.
