Announcing: Appalachian Trail Relocation April, 1998

New York Section Three: N.Y. 22 (Pawling) to N.Y. 55 (Poughquag)

This relocation lengthens this section from 7.0 miles to 7.4 miles. The relocation is on the Nuclear Lake parcel, and now brings the AT down to the west and north sides of Nuclear Lake. At present, there is no overnight use permitted at Nuclear Lake; the Telephone Pioneers shelter is 2.2 miles north of the north end of Nuclear Lake. The former AT route has been blazed as a blue- blazed loop trail, tentatively named the Beekman Uplands loop. The 1998 edition of the Guide to the Appalachian Trail in New York and New Jersey correctly describes this relocation.

The following excerpts from the new guidebook's Trail description (North to South) give the relevant information.

0.0 From the end of New York Section Two, proceed south on N.Y. 22.

2.4 Descend stone steps, pass huge white oak to right of Trail, and cross paved County 20 (West Dover Road). On opposite side of road, turn right, and follow posts.

3.1 Side trail on left leads 0.1 mile to Telephone Pioneers Shelter (water usually available from stream crossed by side trail to shelter).

3.3 Side trail to right leads 100 feet to rocky ledge with beautiful views over farmlands below to east.

3.9 Cross dirt Penny Road (not passable by car).

4.9 Bear left and begin 1998 relocation leading to Nuclear Lake. Straight ahead, blue-blazed trail is the former A.T. route, which rejoins the A.T. in 1.7 miles.

5.0 Cross intermittent stream.

5.3 Bear right and begin to follow the northern shore of Nuclear Lake. Trail crosses several stone walls and then veers away from the shore for a short distance. There is much evidence of recent beaver activity in the area.

5.6 Descend to lake, and continue to follow along edge of lake.

5.8 Bear right and ascend. In another 200 feet, join old road and continue along western shore of lake.

6.0 Leave road and lake area. The clearing to the left is the site of a former lodge. Continue on footpath, passing through mountain laurel thicket.

6.2 Go through narrow passage between rocks, then cross stream, the outlet of Nuclear Lake (with small waterfall a short distance upstream).

6.4 Pass through small hemlock grove, and soon cross stream.

6.6 Cross small stream.

7.1 Bear left. To right, blue-blazed trail is the former route of the A.T., which can be used as an alternate return route.

7.2 Blue-blazed side trail to right leads to parking area on N.Y. 55.

7.3 Pass under power lines.

7.4 Reach paved N.Y. 55 (end of section). To continue, cross road, and reenter woods (see New York Section Four).
