The beaver dam at the south end of Buckabear Pond is causing problems again. Depending on the water level it may or may not be crossable. Some times you can cross below the dam, at others the dam is walkable but wet. This affects the Clinton West and Highlands Trails. In addition the Bearfort Waters Trail along the west side of the pond is under water. Until the trail crew does some serious work in this area, plan on not using the Bearfort Waters Trail, and/or possibly having to wade the Clinton West/Highlands Trail near the dam. |

Old Mine Railroad Trail across Hidden Lake Dam may be too wet to cross without getting wet feet because of the beaver activity. This is usually only for a few days after significant rains. If it is too wet it can be bypassed by using the 3 Lakes and Charcoal Burners trails about 0.2 mile further. There are currently no plans to fix the problem. |

At the request of the landowner, the part of Long Path Section 33 from Elm Drive to Beaver Dam Road will be closed to hikers from Thursday November 21, 2007 until Tuesday January 2, 2008. This period covers the major hunting seasons and signs are being put up. The portion of the old trail South of Elm Drive has been closed for years but it seems some people are using parts of it. That portion which is also on private land, which was not open anyway, is now definitely closed for the hunting seasons and until further notice. South of Elm Drive the major part of L-P Section 33 is on roads which can be hiked. The "Closed" signs will be taken down and notices sent out when the part from Elm Drive to Beaver Dam Road is reopened on January 2nd. Although the L-P is closed, the old ski run itself, at Beaver Dam Road is Thacher Park Property and of course, is open for use for skiing, sledding, etc. Clark H. The pedestrian tunnel carrying the AT and 1777 Trail underneath Route 9W (in between Bear Mountain State Park and the zoo) is temporarily closed for construction work. A temporary stoplight has been set up just north of the tunnel to provide a safe crossing. The closure is expected to last at least through February.
Northbound directions: Continue on the paved walkway until just past the bathrooms, where a walkway turns off to the right and leads to the stoplight crossing. After crossing 9W, pass though open gate and continue towards pool and zoo entrances to rejoin AT northbound.
Southbound directions: Pass blocked off tunnel entrance and continue straight to open gate in fence to reach stoplight crossing. After crossing 9W, continue on walkway to bathrooms, then turn left and follow wide paved walkway to rejoin AT southbound. |
