On Sunday, 12/15 four members of the Trail Conference continued the
work of clearing damage from the November ice storms in Minnewaska.
The LP is now clear all the way from the parking area at Jenny Lane to
where it crosses 'Slate Bank Road' (That's the old Carriageway on Map
9 that passes a formation known as Wolf Jaw, about 1/3 mile southwest
of Castle Point.)

trail: Barton Swamp (and connecting trails)
location: lower portion in valley between Western and Main ridges
comments: As has been reported elsewhere, this trail was devastated by
a recent ice storm. Today, while leading an AMC hike, we
encountered almost impassable conditions everywhere in the valley
between the Western and main ridges of Schunemunk, especially on the
Barton swamp Trail. Huge numbers of blowdowns and fallen
branches, on this trail and the lower portions of the Western Ridge
and Sweet Clover Trails. The Trestle Trail was clear, and the
Jessup below the Barton was OK. Above this, there were spots
with blowdown, but not too bad. The LP on the west ridge was OK.

Some of the trails are open in Minnewaska. For more details call
the Park
at: 845-255-0752.
We have crews working on clearing the High Peterskill Trail today
and some
of the others have been done already.
Crews are working on the AT near Pochuck Mt.

A quick up-date on post ice storm conditions in the affected NY and
NJ parks:
1) Minnewaska S. P., NY is closed and their phone lines are still
out. The management indicates that it could be
up to two weeks before some trails are opened.
They would like to start by opening the carriage roads and the High
Peterskill Trail. They are asking for our chainsaw help
here. Contact Larry Braun if you can help.
2) Sam's Point Preserve, NY - not yet received word back from them
3) Schunemunk S. P., NY has considerable downed branches and some
trees but the trails are open.
4) High Point S. P., NJ is open but they do not recommend hiking as
most of the trails above 1300 feet, including
the AT, are blocked and will be for a couple of
weeks. The AT will be opened first. Park management is looking at
Thanksgiving weekend as a possible chainsaw attack
time. Certified chainsawyers needed. Contact
Overseer Shawn Viggiano if you can help.
5) Stokes S. F., NJ is open with no blocked trails that we've heard
of yet.
6) Wawayanda S. P., NJ has downed branches and some significant wet
areas, but all trails are open.
It would appear that from 1300 to 1500 feet elevation is likely to
have considerable downed branches. Over 1500
feet may have a considerable number of downed
trees as well.
