Location: Delware Water Gap, NJ.

From Walpack Center (by the former post office), go east for half a mile, then turn south (at the cemetery) along Mountain Road. Continue along Mountain Road for about two miles until you see Buttermilk Falls on the left. Parking is available on the west side of the road.

Trail:

Buttermilk Falls Trail, 1.9 miles

Description:

Buttermilk Falls is a picturesque waterfall right by the road. It gains or loses character depending on the amount of water cascading over it. The blue-on-white-blazed Buttermilk Falls Trail climbs for 1.9 miles to the Appalachian Trail on the ridge.

From the waterfall, the trail goes south along the road for a short distance, then turns left and climbs around to the top of the falls. (Do not climb directly along the falls.) The trail continues uphill, crossing the Woods Road Trail, and ends at the Appalachian Trail, 1.2 miles north of Crater Lake.

For a suggested loop hike: Start at the Buttermilk Falls Trail, and follow it to Woods Road. Turn right on Woods Road for one mile to the beaver dam, and continue past it to Hemlock Pond. Follow the road around Hemlock Pond to the orange blazes of the Hemlock Pond Trail. Take the Hemlock Pond Trail uphill for one-quarter mile until it meets the Appalachian Trail (by Crater Lake). Follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail north for 1.25 miles to the top of the Buttermilk Falls Trail, which may then be followed back to the parking area. This is a nice round trip of 6.5 miles.
