Description:
Although the Camp Smith trail may not be the easiest of beginner
hikes, the extra effort will be well rewarded
with wonderful views of the Hudson River and
surrounding historical areas. The section that I find most pleasurable
is from the U-bend parking lot on US 6, south to the former toll
house, which has been restored as a visitor center.
This section is approx. 2.2 miles in length and can be
hiked year-round. You reach the trailhead by following US 6 south from
Bear Mountain Bridge or north from Peekskill. There
are definitely some sections of this trail that require scrambling
and climbing, but all are relatively short. Be sure to
bring binoculars so that you can check out the
hawks, trains and Iona Island. Bald eagles winter on the south end of
Iona Island.
