About Google Earth

Google Earth is a wonderful 3D topography and aerial image earth viewer freely available from Google at http://earth.google.com/.  It allows the user to "fly" over the landscape, viewing it dynamically from whatever altitude, direction, and tilt he/she pleases.  Especially nice for looking at mountains, due to the very realistic rendering of the shapes. You must install Google Earth on your machine before clicking on the .kml files below.

From: Charles Fisher

Here is something you may find useful.  I created a composite overlay of your seven sectional trail maps to display them in Google Earth.  Click on the .kml file above which willl open Google Earth displaying southern New York with the maps overlayed.  The user can vary the opacity of the maps from 0% (transparent) to 100% (opaque).

To give you an idea, I also attach two plain static images of a section of the trail overlay image in the Catskills saved from Google Earth.  The first renders the map completely opaquely, concealing the Google Earth aerial photography.  However, you can still see the three dimensional landscape.  The second one is the same view, but the overlay has been made almost completely transparent, so that you see mostly the satellite imagery with a faint trace of the trail map marked on the land.
