Mileage: 2.64
Trail Location:
The Sapphire Trail runs from near the Harriman Train Station on Rt 17 to
the Appalachian Trail near Indian Hill. It provides train access to the AT
and the trails on Indian Hill (part of Sterling Forest State Park). The trail
is currently shown as proposed on the latest printing of the Harriman
Map Set. The image shown here is the final routing of the trail.
Description of Route:
The trail begins by following a short entry road, opposite the Harriman Commuter
Rail Parking Lot, on Rt. 17. where it enters into a wooded, old farm area as
it heads south, away from a gas pipe line and a housing development. It passes
by and through stone walls and rock outcroppings as it turns west to join a
main north/south old woods road. The trail follows the woods road, crossing
a stream and continues to follow the woods road to the right where it crosses
a stream as it continues on the remains of the main woods road. The trail passes
through a wet area and then joins an existing, blue blazed, foot path leading
to and through the AT Corridor where it connects to and ends at the AT, opposite
the Indian Hill area, just west of the Indian Hill - AT Link Trail.
The Sapphire Trail, not only provides access to the AT, but more importantly,
to Indian Hill, via its link to the AT, the Furnace and Wildcat Mt, Trails.
Also, it will serve as a link, via the above mentioned trails, to two public
transportation stops on the east side of Sterling Forest, along Rt. 17. In
addition, ample parking is available at the Harriman Commuter Rail Station
in the north and to the south, at the trail head of the Wildcat Mt. Trail
at Rt. 17 - 17A as well as the Indian Hill trail head parking area.
