| Storm King trails are partially open as of 10/25/2002.
See press release. All of
these problems are the result of the discovery of unexploded ordnance
(UXO) during the forest fire in 1999. See Army
Corp report.
However there are special conditions that will remain in place
indefinitely. All of the trails, and 25 feet either side, have been
swept for UXOs and any found have been removed. It is believed that
only hot fires will cause the remaining ordnance to explode so it
should be safe to hike in the area if appropriate precautions are
taken. See sign and restrictions
below. There is a new trail, the Crossover
Trail, that allows people to complete
loops in area C without going into area B.
The area is divided into three regions:
- A - west of Route 9W
- B - south of the clove between Storm King and Crows Nest
- C - north of the clove between Storm King and Crows Nest

Essentially no UXOs were found in regions A and C. Currently,
10/25/2002, area B is still closed and will remain closed at least
until the trail crew finishes clearing the trails.
Sign
You will see these signs posted in many locations. This one is at
the Route 9W parking lot.

Restrictions
- Be especially careful of all fires including smoking. Because of
the possibility of remaining UXOs, firefighters will never
be allowed into the area to fight any fires.
- If you should find any UXOs, DO NOT TOUCH. Please report them
to: 845-786-2781.
- No hunting.
- Do not disturb any flagging tape or posts that you see in the
area. These mark areas to help with future clearing efforts.
Crossover Trail
The Crossover Trail (shown in red dots below) that avoids going
into Area B to get from the Stillman Spring Trail to the Howell Trail
going up Storm King is now open (11/25/2002). It is blazed Red.
