Trail conditions in this area change rapidly
particularly in the winter. Take any reports with a grain of salt. By the time you get there things may have changed
considerably. Consult local weather forecasts as your
primary source of what to expect but be prepared for considerable differences. The New
York-New Jersey Trail Conference assumes no responsibility for the accuracy of the
reports. Especially in the winter, hikers should make sure that they are prepared for the
conditions that might be encountered. Snowshoes and/or crampons may be needed, especially in
the Catskills.
If you are planning a hike and need to know about conditions, try
posting your destination on the Viewpoint forum (menubar above). Many
local hikers read and reply to this forum and one may have been where
you plan to go recently.
Here are some more suggestions of web resources that may help you:
- Try this link for additional
condition reports.
- Or this one
for Adirondacks conditions.
- Or snow
forecasts.
- Or look at ski area reports for how much new natural snow they got (not how
much they made). For NY ski
reports look at areas near the hiking trails such as Hunter or Belleayre in
the Catskills, Catamount in the South Taconics, Sterling Forest in Sterling
Forest. For NJ ski
reports look at Campgaw for the Ramapos and Mountain Creek for the AT in the
northwest.
- You can call NY DEC in New Paltz for a recorded trail report on the
Catskills, (845) 256-4182.
