The Bear Mountain Trails Project:

  • The Bear Mountain Trails Project (BMTP) is the largest volunteer project in the 87-year history of the NY-NJ Trail Conference and is projected to take a minimum of five years to complete.  While the BMTP will improve all of the trails on Bear Mountain, the focus will be on the Appalachian Trail (AT), the first section of which opened in 1923 on Bear Mountain.  High use and consequent erosion of the current trail route on the mountain created the need for this major overhaul.  Completing the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Bear Mountain Trails will require continued support from dedicated volunteers like you. The NY-NJ Trail Conference will be running work trips and workshops reguarly and we invite both individual volunteers as well as groups! Check out the Bear Mountain Trails Project pages to find out more!
