Maintainer
Monitor
Shelter

Trail Maintainer

  • Go out on at least 2 work and inspection trips annually
    • Clip and trim trail to keep it open and passable
    • Clean waterbars
    • Keep trail free from litter and graffiti
    • Remove fallen trees and limbs from trail
    • Repaint blazes when missing, faded or stretched
  • Submit semiannual trail maintenance reports to supervisor
  • Report problems and trail misuse to supervisor
  • Request help for major repairs from supervisor

Monitor (of Appalachian Trail Lands)

  • Walk corridor boundaries 2 to 4 times per year
    • Check on monuments within the corridor
    • Check boundary markers
    • Find evidence of trespassing such as dumping, logging, ATVs, etc.
    • Be alert to improvements that prevent trespass
  • Respond to reports of discovered problems within a responable time period to Corridor Manager
  • Submit twice yearly reports on condition of corridor to corridor manager

Shelter Maintainer

  • Go out on at least 2 work and inspection trips annually
    • Trim vegetation around shelter
    • Inspect water supply
    • Keep shelter free from litter and graffiti
    • Inspect privy or other sanitation provisions
    • Check signs
  • Submit semiannual shelter maintenance reports to supervisor
  • Report problems and shelter misuse to supervisor
  • Request help for major repairs from supervisor
