Trail U 596 - Intro to Bear Mountain Trails Project

Workshop Number:

Join us for an on-site tour
of the famed Bear Mountain Trails Project and
the work lined up to make repairs to the historic Major Welch Trail
(one of the first trails the Trail Conference ever built)
and the legendary Appalachian Trail!

This project allows interested volunteers, with no prior trail experience necessary, the opportunity to apprentice and work with a staff of crew leaders in learning the tools and techniques of basic trail construction and stonework. During the orientation, detailed explanations of the methods used for trail construction and opportunites to learn such techniques will be covered, along with a history of both the project and the park.

Once completing the Orientation, participants will be able register for a free series of workshops to follow during the weekends of September that will give volunteers the the basic skill sets necessary to work as productive members of a trail crew.

Regardless of whether you arrive a seasoned trail worker or a complete novice, training efforts are tailored to fit each individual's skill level. Want to learn as much as possible? Volunteers are free to set their own schedule for involvement once they take a workshop after the orientation. We will be offering apprenticeship opportunities 5 days a week from Wednesday though Sunday through the end of November!

All of this is free of charge, providing you show up for this Orientation, so please join us in this ongoing effort of making improvements to one of America's most heavily trafficked and adored parklands. Your work will stand the test of time for future generations to enjoy and be inspired by. We hope to see you out there.
