| Always be on the lookout for a potential volunteer. You
never know when you will find someone who is interested in helping.
This method is helpful for finding out if someone might be even
remotely interested. It is not a "sell" but a listen. Steer
the topic of conversation such they do most of the talking. By
actively listening, you do not have to ask and be turned down.
Ask questions
- Listen for clues on their interests, concerns
- what volunteering they have done
- would they like to do tasks similar to their paying job or
different
- what are their family, work or other volunteer commitments
Be prepared to talk about the organization or what you do as a
volunteer
- specific programs based on interests of the listener
- 2-3 different volunteer jobs with 2 or 3 in reserve
- Know what is involved for the jobs including meetings, phone
calls, outdoor work, types of problems
- Know what you expect of them
- Be able to relate those programs to his/her interest if possible
- Make sure the person can ask questions
