Denise Royle, an ecologist completing a Ph.D. in ecology at Rutgers University, will lead study hikes through hemlock forests at Wawayanda State Park on Saturday, June 22, 2002. Her research focuses on hemlock ecology and the effects of site and landscape factors on the rate of hemlock defoliation by the hemlock woolly adelgid.

On the morning hike, (10 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) we will walk up to 1 mile along a gentle trail through hemlock stands, directly across from the parking lot. There we will learn about hemlock ecology and see hemlock trees up close. (Ideal for families.)

On the afternoon hike (bring your own bag lunch), we will hike over to the Wawayanda Hemlock Ravine Natural Area near the AT. This will be a more strenuous hike. The ravine is one of high relief with 300-foot increases in elevation from Doublekill Creek to surrounding hills. Dress appropriately; hiking shoes or boots recommended. Bring water and snacks. Trails are lacking in some areas.

Pre registration is required and attendance will be limited to 30. We will meet in the main parking lot at the headquarters of Wawayanda State Park in Hewitt, NJ (near the main entrance) by 10 a.m. (12:45 p.m. for afternoon-only session). Please register for the whole day or either the morning walk or afternoon hike.
